In the past few years, Dr. Michels has become concerned that more and more individuals are either unable or, even worse, unwilling to educate themselves about medical, technical, and scientific issues that directly impact their lives. The inevitable result of ignorance, willful blindness, and self-delusion is to relinquish control over decision-making to others, others who probably do not have your best interests in mind. This is most important regarding healthcare decisions, but it is not exclusive to this domain. Knowledge is power. Unfortunately, people who consider themselves well-educated often have never taken science classes leaving them ignorant regarding a basic understanding of how their body functions, how a car engine converts gasoline to rotation of the wheels, and many other issues that we are faced with on a daily basis. This is a great failing of our education system.
Open Science Forum is dedicated to correcting this situation and helping everyone to develop their critical thinking skills. The goal is to make it easier for anyone to get the information needed for an informed decision on issues related to science and healthcare. To quote Thomas Jefferson, "I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
